G Thompson memorial

The memorial is inscribed as follows:

“To the Glory of God and in Loving Memory of Signaller George Thompson, Royal Garrison Artillery, The beloved son of George and Mary Thompson of 10 Leeman Road, York, who died of wounds in France Nov. 6th 1917. Aged 20 years. A true Christian, a good son, a brave soldier, He was ready when the call came. ‘I will give you rest.’”

George Thompson’s memorial was originally placed in the Railway Mission, Welton Street, York. When the premises were vacated in 1936 the Vicar of St Barnabas’ Church applied for permission to move it to its current location. This information was taken from the United Kingdom National Inventory of War Memorials.

For additional information on these soldiers see the appropriate Casualty Roll of Honour page.
